Details

Two manta rays turn through deep blue water on the hand-painted dial of this custom timepiece, wings suspended mid-beat. Shafts of surface light fall past them into the dark, and a coral reef rises along the lower edge in orange, red and yellow. Neither one leads. Divers describe the movement as flight, and that is the moment our artists painted.

The artwork sits on the Spinnaker Spence 300, a 40mm stainless steel diver from a brand that names its collections after the pioneers who charted the underwater world. A Japanese Miyota 9039 automatic drives it, under an anti-reflection coated sapphire lens, with a screw-down crown, a unidirectional bezel and Swiss Super-LumiNova on the applied indices. The case is water resistant to 300 meters (30 ATM). A piece that carries a whole reef on your wrist, and starts a conversation wherever it goes.

Hand-painted, no two dials are alike.

Spinnaker Spence Underwater Dancers

Flight Beneath the Surface

Two manta rays turn through deep blue water on a hand-painted custom dial, wings suspended mid-beat as sunlight falls past them toward a coral reef below. The Spinnaker Spence Underwater Dancers puts a dive encounter on a watch built for the water it describes.

Divers rarely describe a manta the way they describe other fish. They describe the moment they stopped swimming to watch. An official Spinnaker × IFL Watches collaboration, the Underwater Dancers holds that pause on a dial our artists painted by hand — two animals moving together, neither one leading, in water that keeps the time for them. It arrives the day after World Manta Ray Day.

Built for the Water It Describes

  • Nothing Interrupts the Scene

The movement runs three hands and no date, so no window cuts through the painting. The reef stays unbroken along the bottom of the dial and the water above it stays whole.

  • Light for When There Is None

The applied indices carry Swiss Super-LumiNova, so the watch stays readable long after the sunlight painted across the dial has stopped reaching that far down.

  • A Bezel That Turns One Way

The dive bezel ratchets in a single direction, so elapsed time can only ever read longer than it is. It is the oldest safety convention in diving, and it still works.

  • Hand-Painted, No Two Alike

Our artists paint each dial individually, so the rays turn a little differently on every piece. No two carry the same water.

  • 40mm Steel, Automatic, on a Bracelet

A 40mm stainless steel case, 11.5mm thick, under an anti-reflection coated sapphire lens. The Japanese M-MIY-9039 automatic drives it, on a 20mm steel bracelet. Water resistance is rated to 30 ATM.

Neither One Leads

Our artists began with the encounter rather than the animal. A manta crosses overhead on a wingspan reaching seven meters, and every diver who has seen it uses the same word — flight. Painting one would have described a fish. Painting two describes a dance. On the dial they glide in harmony through deep blue water, wings held mid-beat, as shafts of surface light fall past them into the dark below. A coral reef rises along the lower edge in orange, red and yellow, holding the scene above the ocean floor. Neither ray leads. Look at it long enough and the stillness starts to feel like motion, which is exactly what it felt like underwater.

Named for the People Who Went First

Spinnaker names every collection after someone who went into the water first, and builds dive watches around the idea. The Spence 300 carries its depth rating in its name — 300 meters, sealed behind a screw-down crown and a screw-back case. It made the right canvas for a reason that has nothing to do with looks. The movement runs three hands and no date, so nothing cuts a window through the scene, and a 40mm case keeps a busy dial legible rather than crowded. A brand built around the people who charted the underwater world, given a dial of the animal they went down to see.
